Are work and productivity the only things on your mind?

I don’t blame you. As workers, many of us feel the need to do something productive at work and in our spare time. This toxic productivity is a real problem.

Most of us are associated with social media one way or another. It’s common to see things that emphasise the values of hard work, hustle, and self-improvement. And quite often, we tend to lose ourselves in the process.

Like everything, there’s a limit.

If you’re:

 • Checking in with work during time with your friends or family.
 • Always making yourself busy and ‘on the go’.
 • Valuing yourself based on your work.
 • Constantly concerned with productivity.
 • Feeling guilty when taking breaks.
 • Struggling to have fun.

Then, there’s a good chance you’re probably experiencing the toxic productivity mindset.

what is toxic productivity

What’s toxic productivity culture?

Toxic productivity is when one is fixated on getting work done and ensuring they’re being as productive as possible.

Often, this mindset is determined to over-exceed the expectations no matter what.

Another way to put it is extreme workaholism. It’s not much different than work addiction

Nowadays, it’s easy to compare yourself to others and get lost in the loophole of society’s expectations.

We’re in a culture where self-improvement and professional development are being preached day in and day out. You may hear a lot of people and gurus online making it clear that they work 12-14 hours a day, seven days a week.

As a result, you may start to feel worthless, guilty, or anxious because you’re not achieving the same things they have.

toxic productivity problems

What’s the problem with productivity?

There are more than physical consequences when it comes to extreme productivity. Not only are you exhausting yourself physically, but you’re also putting your own well-being at risk.

To be more precise, there are 5 reasons why productivity is ruining your mental health.

1. You neglect the other aspects of your life

Life’s about more than just doing work.

When productivity becomes a dominant part of your life, it’s natural to slowly exclude and isolate yourself from everything else.

Before you know it, time flies by in an instant. As you stay focused on working and committing to a schedule, it’s easy to forget about the other things that matter.

Some of those things I’m talking about include:

 • Relationships
 • Health
 • Spirituality
 • Purpose
 • Your time

Your finances, education, and career are just as important. The only problem is the lack of work-life balance.

2. You avoid the root of your problems

Work is a good distraction to avoid facing the roots of your problems.

There’s an underlying problem if the main motivation behind your work ethic stems from negative emotions. These roots are what could be causing sadness, loneliness, and even depression.

Avoiding this by overworking yourself only prolongs those feelings and deteriorates your happiness further.

Hustling hard will only make you tired and burned out. It doesn’t solve everything.

3. You have a lack of gratitude

You’ve always focused on chasing something that you don’t have to the point you forget about the things you do have.

As Oprah Winfrey once said:

If you look at what you have in life, you’ll always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you’ll never have enough.

It affects your mindset when you’re not satisfied with your progress.

Don’t get me wrong – it’s inspirational to be ambitious, passionate, and have goals to pursue.

The only downside is if you get caught too deep in your desires, you won’t live a more fulfilling life since you forget to appreciate the little things.

4. You have feelings of emptiness

Are you left with an empty or hollow feeling at the end of a workday?

Perhaps the work you’ve been focusing on all this time isn’t as fulfilling as you expected. Somehow, it’s not as meaningful anymore.

It all becomes a systematic routine that you follow on a daily basis. You just tell yourself to get to work like a robot without much consideration of anything else, besides how productive you are.

Sometimes, when you work so hard towards a goal you lose sight of the bigger picture. To the point, it becomes lonely and no longer adding to your genuine happiness.

5. You’ve lost your social skills

This is relatable between many workaholics and those who spend most of their time in the office.

Eventually, you lose your sense of self and forget that you have a life outside of work.

Since productivity and hustle is the main thing you’ve been concerned about, your social life declines. It’s not uncommon to feel as if you no longer know how to interact with others in a social setting because you’ve been taking everything so seriously.

You may also lose your sense of fun and forget how to enjoy things. As you spend so much time isolating yourself from the world, it’s natural that you forget how to socialize and be yourself.

toxic productivity mindset

How to escape the toxic productivity mindset?

Take a step back to clear your mind from your working life and enjoy some downtime. We’re not robots programmed to work countless hours without rest. That’s what makes us human.

Here are some steps you can take to escape the toxic productivity mindset:

 • Set realistic goals and expectations.
 • Recognise every milestone.
 • Add downtime to your schedule.
 • Spend more time with friends and family.
 • Don’t compare yourself to others.

When it comes to productivity, what matters more is not how long you work but what you manage to get done within the allocated time.

How do I get motivated to be productive?

One reason we tend not to be satisfied despite all the hours we put into our work is that we don’t see any significant results. It almost feels like running in circles, which is common for any entrepreneur or startup company.

To address this, acknowledge every step you take.

Remember that success is a journey, not a destination. In other words, enjoy the ride.

A productivity hack is to have fun in what you do and to not be so hard on yourself. Shift your mindset optimistically and you’re more likely to keep going without feeling frustrated.

Don’t obsess over what you don’t have. Reverse engineer every objective into small actionable steps and set realistic, measurable goals.

Addressing Toxic Productivity Culture

Working hard is one thing. Toxic productivity is another.

It’s commendable being productive consistently. However, hustling hard like a machine only makes you tired and less effective.

Hard work is a great virtue but it needs to be balanced. Above all, your physical and mental health is one of the most important things that should be taken care of.

While it’s admirable to have a strong work ethic, nothing is worth the expense of your own wellbeing.

So, ask yourself if what you do genuinely makes you happy. If that’s not the case and the main energy behind your work ethic stems from negative emotions, it’s time to switch things up.

5 Reasons to Choose Mindful Marketing and How to Start https://limitbreaker.co/reasons-to-choose-mindful-marketing/ Fri, 17 Sep 2021 14:35:46 +0000 https://limitbreaker.co/?p=15581 Learn why mindful marketing is so important to use in your business and how to get started with this step-by-step guide.

The post 5 Reasons to Choose Mindful Marketing and How to Start appeared first on Limit Breaker.

]]>
We grew up with technology. Our kids are growing up with technology. The digital era is inevitably part of our lives. So how can you make your business or brand stand out from the crowd and all the noise? Mindful marketing is the way and here’s why.

Did you know that every day we are exposed to around 4k to 10k ads? Well, imagine how overwhelming it is to just think of how you can stand out and be that one trigger that actually convinces users to click on an ad and buy.

There is so much competition nowadays. There are billions of pieces of content uploaded through all the social media platforms daily. Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook, etc.

why mindful marketing

Why choose mindful marketing?

Okay, so I don’t want to scare you, there’s a silver lining to this. You just need to incorporate mindful marketing to stand out and here’s why.

Reason 1: Consumers are tired of the noise

Hence the daily ads we’re exposed to. For every 3 Instagram posts or stories you see an ad, you’ve felt it and so have consumers.

We’re tired of the noise. Tired of being exposed to triggers in our daily lives. Tired of feeling like we need to be part of that coaching program, course, buy those shoes, you get the idea.

Oh, but if you purchase in the next 24 hours you get a 30% discount so ‘buy now’. It’s annoying, and frankly, it’s outdated.

I’m a marketing specialist and it’s funny how much I even ‘hate’ marketing tactics because I firmly believe that marketing needs to change.

And as business owners, it’s our responsibility to craft that balance between inciting people to buy but promoting our products or services with a mindful marketing approach.

Reason 2: Conscious consumerism is growing rapidly

If you don’t know what a conscious consumer is, I’ll give you my definition: Conscious consumerism is the act of buying with purpose from a group of people. And this ‘group’ of people has actually been growing so much in recent years.

The Good Trade, for example, is an online magazine that features ethical and sustainable brands because conscious consumers have been asking for this. This niche has been rapidly growing within the last couple of years because people are becoming more mindful of what they buy.

They are educating themselves in sites like this one to learn how to choose quality over quantity, avoid plastic consumption, repurpose, upcycle, etc.

Reason 3: Old school marketing is dying

Mass consumption marketing tactics are slowly dying. Even with the new normal and now that people have access to things like Netflix and HBO, outdated TV ads are just not so relevant anymore.

Of course, they will give you a wide reach if you have the money to invest in this tactic, but conscious consumers choose what to see, where they see it and how they see it.

They will not spend 3 hours per day chained to the local channel and see what infomercial is on. And while this is obvious, as a business owner you have to embrace that what worked before and how our world functions nowadays are not exactly the secret formula for success in the future.

good person

Reason 4: Mindful marketing will empower your audience and help you build a community

We need messaging that empowers us. Messaging that can make us feel part of a community. A brand story and if you achieve this with your brand, you will be selling more than just the product.

People need the human factor to religiously follow a brand and promote it as their own. And this all comes down to choosing your brand values and making sure they are threaded in your storytelling all the time.

Reason 5: Circular marketing is more powerful than capitalism

Circular or sustainable marketing will have a powerful effect on your brand message because it will teach the world that you’re not afraid to do things differently. You’ll show that you took a few extra steps to make sure your business aligns with your ethics and sustainability.

Promoting conscious consumerism is hard when we live in a capitalist society. But it will definitely help you stand out from the crowd because you will be marketing yourself as someone who sticks to their values as a business owner.

This screams integrity, and not everyone has the courage to do this, trust me.

how to start journaling

So how can you start using mindful marketing?

Glad you asked, I’ll walk you through step by step how to plan a mindful marketing strategy. Threading that balance between promoting a lifestyle of conscious consumerism to your audience.

1. Define your purpose and brand values

Go bold. Think about what you want your brand to be remembered for. I like to think of a brand purpose in a phrase that contains a verb in action. Such as: Helping people or the planet. Because it never starts or ends, it’s your mission.

Choose the cause you want to support behind everything you do. And it doesn’t matter if you are a personal brand selling digital products or services, or a brand that sells physical products. For example, as a service provider, I plant a tree for every 1:1 project. If you’re a nutritionist you can support organizations about eating disorders and education.

The important part of this step is to put a name to what you already believe in. You already have solid values inside. You just need to materialize them and pick the ones you feel most passionate about.

2. Define your content pillars and messaging

Now it’s time to delve into each of your chosen values as the foundations for marketing your business. Brainstorm what 4-6 content pillars make sense for your brand and use these as the building blocks of your marketing strategy.

Your content pillars will become your most powerful assets because they will allow you to share contrasting and disruptive ideas on how you are doing things differently. They will become your signature stamp and show that you’re not afraid to talk about certain things.

Great transparent content will build trust with your audience. You’ll start to see the magic when people engage with how passionate you are about the values surrounding your brand.

how to succeed as an introvert

3. Focus on intentional promotion

Mindful marketing is all about quality over quantity, even in promotion. You don’t need to be on all the social media platforms out there. You don’t need to post reels or TikTok daily, (even Gina can tell you herself why she stopped being on Instagram).

Do research on which platforms your ideal client is most active on.

Don’t try to do them all at once. I always recommend starting with at least 2 that work for you.

And from there, I also recommend looking at your marketing strategy as a business plan. You can’t focus all your efforts just on social media. See social media platforms are just one of the many channels where you can market your brand.

For years, I was spending all my efforts on Instagram until I learnt that relationship building and looking for like-minded communities and people can bring a whole new realm of possibilities into your business.

Does it happen overnight? Of course not, but you could be one pitch away from a podcast interview, a live or a free feature.

Focus your efforts on creating an integrated marketing promotion on social media. Outreaching to press, building organic traffic with your blog and SEO, maybe doing ads if your budget allows. I know you can’t do it all at once, but look at the big picture, then prioritize.

4. Focus on people over profit

This is where all the steps come together. Regardless of whatever values you have chosen, I strongly believe that conscious consumers everywhere are screaming for more business owners to put people over profit all the time.

This means, paying fair wages, and paying attention to your clients. Finding a way to elevate your storytelling so that perhaps your product or service doesn’t get the “it’s too expensive feeling” but it implies “yeah, I want to support this because I believe in the impact”.

Mindful marketing will help you build an engaged audience that aligns with your purpose. And when you have motivated cheerleaders for your brand, you’ll start to see the magic coming in.

Most business owners want fast results, they want to launch a website, open an Instagram account and then immediately start getting sales. But the most common mistake I see is that they forget to start from the beginning: defining your purpose.

It’s so simple and so many people rush through it. Don’t be afraid to stand out, take things step by step, building a business is a journey and you should enjoy every step of the way.

I hope that you build a brand that you feel proud of and incorporate a powerful message that adds value to the world.

Including topics like perfectionism, overthinking & more.

The post How to Deal With Imposter Syndrome as an Introvert appeared first on Limit Breaker.

]]>
Is there a little voice in your head constantly telling you that you’ll never be enough?

Is it saying:

“You don’t deserve this job?”

“You’ll never be successful?”

“It’s only a matter of time before they find out that you’re a fraud?”

Maybe you’re an introvert and can’t fathom how you’ll ever be taken seriously in a world dominated by successful and charismatic extroverts.

And despite all the preparation, hard work and talent, you can’t seem to shake the feeling of inadequacy?

If this resonates with you, you’re probably experiencing imposter syndrome.

What’s imposter syndrome?

People with imposter syndrome often describe feeling like a fraud. Success is seemingly impossible for this individual because of the belief that they are fundamentally flawed as human beings.

Fortunately, you’re not the only one experiencing this phenomenon. Studies show that 70% of the general population suffer from imposter syndrome at some point in their lives.

While not uncommon, the constant feeling of incompetence can be damaging to your mental well-being and professional growth.

Why are introverts more likely to develop Imposter syndrome than extroverts?

Introverts tend to be self-reflective, and self-aware.

Although these are wonderful qualities to have, they can often lend themselves to feelings of doubt and personal inadequacy. Especially when introverts aren’t the ‘norm’ in business and entrepreneurship.

We’re more likely to experience imposter syndrome if we don’t see many examples of people who look like us or share our background who are clearly succeeding in our field.

Emily Hu

Introverted women of colour particularly experience this phenomenon due to the lack of representation in the professional and entrepreneurial world. So, finding any degree of success is often attributed to pure luck rather than one’s skills or talents.

imposter syndrome problem

Why is imposter syndrome a problem?

Imposter syndrome appears in the form of disruptive thoughts. These disruptive thoughts often prevent you from performing at your full potential.

Below I’ll go through some of the most common.

Perfectionism

As an introvert, you are probably thorough and detail-oriented. There’s nothing wrong with caring about the quality of your work. However, imposter syndrome takes perfectionism to an extreme.

You believe that the quality of the work you do is somehow tied to your inherent worth.

In pursuit of perfection, you might neglect your physical needs. You’ll pull all-nighters to ensure projects are free of error, sacrificing much-needed sleep.

You might spend too much time taking projects ‘back to the drawing board’ because you can’t seem to be satisfied with anything less than perfect.

To appear competent in positions of leadership, you might micromanage your team. This compromises the overall effectiveness of workflow.

Imposter syndrome gives way to the overthinking mind, which has a number of repercussions on your mental and professional wellbeing.

Undervaluing your worth

Do you blame yourself for mishaps and setbacks even when they are out of your control? Are you afraid of demanding self-respect because you haven’t earned it?

Imposter syndrome will have you constantly doubting your capabilities.

You might avoid increasing your rates with an established client even if you have helped their traffic and sales. You might also avoid confrontation with a rude client because you believe their treatment towards you is warranted (spoiler: it’s not).

I regularly think about the quote from the movie Perks of Being a Wallflower:

We accept the love we think we deserve.

Respect is so critical in any relationship. Imposter syndrome will have you undervaluing your worth allowing others to take advantage of this weak spot.

Avoiding opportunities

Maybe you’ve been offered a lucrative gig with a big-time client but passed out of fear of failure. Maybe you shy away from going after that dream job because you don’t believe you have what it takes to succeed.

Imposter syndrome will prevent you from embracing new challenges with open arms. But as the saying goes, “You miss 100% of the chances you don’t take”.

Professional growth and personal development require pushing past your comfort zone. Sometimes you’ll never know your potential until you decide to test your limits.

overcome imposter syndrome

How to overcome imposter syndrome

Accept you for you

No one said being a social butterfly is a prerequisite for success. People can see through inauthenticity and isn’t it exhausting to put on a facade every day? To pretend to be a happy-go-lucky extrovert?

Trust me when I say, you don’t need to be a late-night show host to be liked by others.

Most introverts are very good listeners, and that’s equally important as being able to command a room. It is not about trying to impress everyone, it is about the people who like you for you.

Give up perfectionism

Socially prescribed perfection is a form of perfectionism where one feels that they are expected to excel by other people.

To everyone else, you’re a natural overachiever. So you intend to keep it that way.

However, mistakes happen to the best of us. You’re allowed to fail, allowed to ask questions, allowed to embrace your imperfections

Giving up perfectionism means rebranding yourself. You’re not a perfectionist. You’re so much more than every dotted ‘i’ and crossed ‘t’.

Language

Are you the type of person to dismiss compliments? Do you find yourself saying “sorry”, more than you say “thank you”? Do you use self-deprecating language like “I’m terrible at this”, or “I’ll never be successful”?

Language dictates your thoughts. The more often you tell yourself the lie that you are not good enough, or don’t deserve happiness, the more you will believe it.

Self-affirmations might sound phoney to others at first. However, you can start by replacing negative language with objective language. (i.e I am doing x right now, I am doing y.) Then you can work your way up to positive and encouraging mantras that you can practice daily.

Control your mind

I know, easier said than done. However, practising mindfulness is important in countering that critical voice in your head.

In therapy, you learn the 3Rs method: recognize, regulate and replace.

Recognize the thought. Perhaps it may sound like “I’m not good enough”, “No one will take me seriously”, “I’m too young/too old/too unskilled etc…”

Take a moment to notice when a negative thought arises. Understand what might trigger that thought.

Regulate the thought. Identify the type of distorted belief taking place. Here are a few of them:

 • Overgeneralizing:

Overgeneralizing is drawing a blanket conclusion from an isolated event. For instance, if you gave a poor presentation, you might think to yourself, “I am bad at giving presentations”.

 • Jumping to conclusions:

Mind reading and fortune telling are two ways in which you might create false realities.

Mind reading is when you feel a person will react or think a particular way about you. Fortune telling is predicting a scenario will play out a certain way.

Both forms of conclusion jumping justify avoiding difficult situations.

 • Personalization:

Personalization is when you ascribe blame to yourself in a situation that is out of your control.

For instance, if a client is angry for a mishap that you could not have prevented. You might blame yourself and believe that you don’t deserve to be paid for the work you’ve done.

Replace the thought

Replace cognitive distortions with objective thoughts. Objective thoughts are created with evidence derived from reality.

For instance, if you constantly think, “my coworkers hate me”, ask yourself:

“Is this something they’ve actually said? Do I have concrete evidence to support this belief? Or is this a reality I’ve created based on my own fears and insecurities?”

This method will not fix imposter syndrome immediately. However, self-awareness and continuous practice, it is effective in overcoming destructive thoughts.

No one is perfect

You have a habit of comparing your messy insides to everyone else’s perfect outside. That isn’t fair to you.

In fact, imposter syndrome is more common than you think. People that seem like they have their shit together may have zero idea what they’re doing.

We feel like impostors not because we are uniquely flawed, but because we fail to imagine how deeply flawed everyone else must necessarily also be beneath a more or less polished surface.

There is comfort in knowing that there is a shared, universal feeling of uncertainty even among the best of us (yes, even extroverts). You don’t have to try to be what everyone else is not.

Therapy

As an introvert, you might be hesitant to pursue therapy.

Perhaps, you’re not much of a sharer. Maybe you think your problems are too trivial to seek professional help. Maybe you don’t believe that it works.

Regardless, there is no shame in seeking professional help for your imposter syndrome. You could search high and low for an answer but never find one.

That’s okay, you don’t have to carry the load on your own. Therapy is for everyone. Don’t be afraid to seek treatment.

Imposter syndrome as an introvert

If you’re an introvert experiencing imposter syndrome right now, you’re not alone.

It’s easy to feel like a small fish in a big pond when you’re surrounded by capable and successful extroverts.

However, as you clicked on this article (and got to this point), you probably recognize that there is a problem and it needs to be fixed. Congrats, you are taking a step in the right direction.

Imposter syndrome doesn’t have to rule your life. It’s time to take your power back.

Your calm mind is just an article away.

The post How to Clear Your Mind for Sleep, Meditation, and Work appeared first on Limit Breaker.

]]>
Have you ever wished you could clear your mind? Perhaps you have been lying in bed with your mind racing and wished there was a switch to turn off your thoughts?

Or maybe you find that your meditation sessions are dominated by the same thoughts running over and over in your mind. Or do you long to clear your mind when you come to tackle a big work project and feel distracted and unable to focus?

Many of us struggle with the same feelings and don’t know how to manage our racing minds.

We might instinctively know that we need calm and peace to clear our minds. And yet the irony is that racing thoughts can be what stops us from getting that rest we need. We end up in a cycle that feels impossible to break.

In the face of this, we need practical solutions to clear our minds for sleep, meditation and work – and anything else you might have going on!

Why clear your mind?

So why try to clear your mind? Let’s first think about what happens when you don’t clear your mind!

Perhaps you recognise this feeling. Something triggers you to feel stressed and suddenly you find that your thoughts are running like a spiral in your mind. The same thoughts, or versions of them, pop up over and over again making you feel anxious and trapped.

Scientists call this rumination and it is especially damaging when we dwell on negative thoughts. Rumination can prevent us from getting good rest, de-stressing and finding our way through our challenges.

Rumination can also prevent us from reaching the solutions to our problems. And so in stressful times, when we might be drawn into rumination, having the tools to clear and calm the mind is so important.

As well as getting past rumination, there are also some important scientific benefits to clearing your mind.

These include:

 • Better sleep
 • Decreased stress hormones that can negatively affect your mind and body
 • Increased creativity
 • Better problem-solving skills

Developing skills for clearing your mind is essential for your well-being and mental health.

So here’s how to start to tackle it.

How to clear your mind

By now you have probably identified the times when your most need to clear your mind.

Perhaps you are struggling with racing thoughts when you are trying to drift off to sleep. Or maybe you notice them most at work as they distract you from your task.

Or perhaps your time on the meditation mat is dominated by thoughts of what you are doing later or should have done before you got there.

Or, and you’re not alone here, perhaps you need a bit of help with all three!

Here are some practical suggestions for clearing your mind when you feel you need it most.

clear your mind for sleep

How to clear your mind for sleep

At the end of the day, our mind and body need to receive signals from us that the day is over and it is time for rest.

A racing mind can be so frustrating when all we want to do is sleep and it can stop us from getting the rest that we need.

If you find that your mind is busy right before bed, then here are some tips to clear your mind for sleep.

Pick up a book

A study from the University of Sussex found that reading for just six minutes before bed can reduce stress by 68%. Reading is a great tool for clearing your mind for sleep.

The best books to pick up at bedtime are books that whisk you away to another place in your mind. The best books for clearing your mind will be those that distract you from the thoughts you might otherwise dwell on.

Try an interesting fiction book set in a far-flung location that has very little to do with your day-to-day life. Choose something that will get your imagination going and leave the business books for another time.

Write it down

Give those racing thoughts somewhere to go by writing them down.

Keep a notepad and pen by your bedside to jot down thoughts, to-do list items, ideas or even worries. Having a place for these thoughts to go can get them out of your mind and prevent rumination.

By writing things down you no longer need to remember them and so break that cycle of thought. You can then place your notebook aside and know you will come back to it in the morning.

You might also consider journaling before bed as a way to process the events of the day. A regular journaling practice can be a great way to clear your mind and make sense of your thoughts. It helps us with processing our experiences and emotions.

Getting all your thoughts out on paper can signal to your mind that they are dealt with and so clear your mind ready for sleep.

Focus on your breathing

A great way to clear your mind is to focus on your breathing. Our breath is always with us so it is the perfect tool for calming our mind any time we need it.

Breathing deeply puts our parasympathetic nerve system (which calms our whole body down) into action. This is why focusing on the breath is so important in meditation practice.

Focusing on the breath is a great way of encouraging the mind and body to slow down and gently unwind. Especially when you are lying in bed at the end of the day.

There are lots of ways you try focusing on your breathing. Try, for example, ‘box breathing’. Breathe in deeply for the count of 4, hold your breath for 4, exhale for 4 and hold for 4. Repeat this cycle until you begin to feel your body relax and your thoughts slow.

You could also try counting your breaths and seeing if you can reach one hundred. I often find that I am asleep before I can get there!

clear your mind for meditation

How to clear your mind for meditation

Mediation is a powerful tool for clearing the mind. But to get the best of your meditation session you might like to spend some time clearing your mind before you begin.

There is nothing worse than being midway through a meditation session with a to-do list item spinning endlessly through your mind!

Do a mind declutter

A mind declutter is a great technique for getting those thoughts out of your head and onto paper. Decluttering my mind is one of my go-to strategies when I am feeling stressed or am overthinking.

To help you clear your mind I have put together the mind declutter routine that you can download for free:

The mind declutter guides you through clearing the mind by becoming aware of what is going on in your mind and body. It gently slows the mind and brings you back into the present moment.

A mind declutter is great pre-meditation support or five-minute pick me up when you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

Find a distraction-free space

Support your intention to find a moment of calm during your meditation practice by setting up a distraction-free space.

Try and find a time when you are unlikely to be distracted by others. Perhaps meditating first thing in the morning or last thing at night.

Or try going out on a walk and finding a quiet place outdoors. Knowing you have a little bit of your time to yourself can help clear your mind for meditation.

If you can, then moving away from your workspace can help clear the mind of thoughts. A different view, away from reminders of everything you have left to do, can help the mind unwind and relax.

You could even consider setting up your own meditation space.

Write it down first

You might also find that your notebook and pen come in handy here again!

Take a moment to jot down the thoughts that are loudest in your mind before you begin your meditation.

Journaling your thoughts can get your thoughts out of your mind. But it also signals to your brain that these thoughts are bring processed so you don’t need to keep being reminded of them!

If you are new to journaling, then check out my guide to getting started journaling.

You could also make a list of what you have left to do that day so that your focus can be entirely on your meditation and not your to-do list.

clear your mind for work

How to clear your mind for work

Distractions at work can make a big difference to our productivity. When we are working on a project that requires us to be creative or to problem solve then we need a clear mind to be at our best.

If you find yourself distracted when you want to be focused at work then try these tips to clear your mind for work.

Do a brain dump

When you are about to do a big project that needs your attention, try a brain dump. Imagine a brain dump like opening up your handbag and pouring the contents onto the floor! Everything comes out and you can see exactly what is going on in there!

Brain dumps work by taking what is abstract and circling around your mind and making it solid. As I’ve mentioned, it also signals to your mind that a task is in hand so you don’t need to be reminded about it.

To do a brain dump simply grab a pen and paper and start writing. Bullet points work well. Your bullet points could be anything from things you need to do to problems you are worried about or people who are on your mind.

Keep going until you feel a sense of release and no new thoughts come to mind. The process of doing a brain dump can make you feel instantly better.

You can also use the list as a tool for resolving some of those worries. Come back to the list later and see if you can knock any of those actions off your list or process them further through journaling.

Change your surroundings

If you’re midway through your workday and need to clear your mind then try a change of scene.

Sometimes our reaction to a tired or overrun mind can be to numb it with things like social media. But this doesn’t give our mind the break it needs.

Instead, get up from your desk and have a change of surroundings. We are part of our environment and what we see around us has a big impact on our minds.

Try having a walk, even just for ten minutes, to revive your tired mind and clear your thoughts. Or perhaps try working in a different location if this is possible for you.

A change of scenery can change our approach to our task and make us much more productive. Give it a try the next time you need to clear your mind for work.

Clear your mind for your mental health

We all have a racing mind from time to time but with the right tools, we can keep our thoughts in check.

Having a clear mind begins with noticing when we are stressed and when our mind begins to race. By having techniques available to you to clear your mind you can take fast and effective action to get back on track.

Doing so will have a huge impact on your mental health as well as making you more productive.

Life can throw all sorts of stressful moments but knowing how to clear your mind can keep you calm and in control.

How to Succeed in Business as an Introvert https://limitbreaker.co/how-to-succeed-in-business-as-an-introvert/ Sat, 07 Aug 2021 12:46:24 +0000 https://limitbreaker.co/?p=15468 Learn how to succeed in business as an introvert with this guide, designed to help you see which introverted tendencies will move you forward.

The post How to Succeed in Business as an Introvert appeared first on Limit Breaker.

]]>
When deciding to start a business, many introverts have a common concern: whether their personality type will hold them back from knowing how to succeed in business as an introvert.

In reality, being introverted can make someone even more competent in the business world.

With an estimated 30-50 per cent of the global population identifying with introverted characteristics, there are already countless examples of how introverts are succeeding as business leaders and entrepreneurs.

So in this article, we’re going to explore how to succeed in business as an introvert and how you might already be succeeding with your introverted tendencies.

How to succeed in business as an introvert

If you’ve landed on this article, you’re likely unsure of if you can succeed as an introvert in business.

We believe you absolutely can (because we happen to be introverts too)! So let’s start by exploring what makes you good at business already, as an introvert.

how to succeed as an introvert

What makes introverts good at business

Being an introvert means your unique perspective and ideas are brought to the decision-making table. What you may think are shortcomings because of your personality are actually strengths.

Introverts are more likely to weigh all the options available to them and take the time to make the best overall choice for the team.

While the saying “time is money” is often used and respected. It’s just as worthwhile to know when to slow down and focus inward.

As introspective beings, introverts are naturally inclined to listen, gather information, and mull things over before moving forward and executing a plan.

This allows them to see the most efficient and attainable paths to achieving their goals. Which is what makes them so valuable as business professionals and leaders.

When others charge ahead without thinking about the logistics, the risks involved and how their choices will impact the business in the future.

They’ll be thankful to have an introvert around or an introvert leading them. Since all those considerations were the first thing on an introvert’s mind and to-do list.

introvert success tips

4 tips to succeed in business as an introvert

Want to learn more about how to succeed in business as an introvert? Check out the four tips below to start leveraging your personality traits for your benefit.

Tip #1: Embrace productive collaboration

For any successful business to run smoothly, it requires people working together. Whether it be a single owner or CEO running it independently. Or a comprehensive hierarchy made up of hundreds of employees and tiers of management.

When it comes time to collaborate with others, introverts have a handy instinct. During team meetings or projects, an introvert (more often than not) will always want to hear everyone’s ideas and thoughts equally.

It may seem like an introvert would be too shy to speak up or hesitate to contribute as part of a team.

But it’s more likely for them to do the opposite. Speaking up to offer thoughtful input that they consider important and listening attentively when others share their own.

This instinct will likely boost team sessions in terms of productivity and the chances of getting the most out of each team member, which are often the ideal goals for any meeting.

Tip #2: Have a backup plan

Being as self-aware as an introvert means that you frequently check in with yourself and try to understand how you really feel about things.

It might seem like a good idea to invest in a certain new product or strategy for your business initially. But introverts will also factor in their gut feeling about something.

Suppose they don’t personally feel comfortable going through with a deal or making a change. In that case, they’re more likely to review other possibilities.

That means an introvert will probably have backup plans ready or under consideration during their decision-making process. For businesses, having a backup or recovery plan is highly recommended if not necessary.

An introvert can tap into their ‘cautious’ ways and stress the importance of being ready for the worst outcomes, or at least start the conversation.

This is meaningful enough since it’s more likely than not for businesses to focus on other things like growth/scaling and remaining competitive rather than seeing the details.

Tip #3: Make the most of your solitude

We introverts enjoy our alone time.

This is a fair assumption since many introverts would say they don’t mind being alone and even need it from time to time.

But it requires a disclaimer:

Introverts like to be alone because it helps them recharge mentally, not necessarily because they don’t like being around other people.

So it makes a lot of sense for introverts to desire and spend some time in solitude, even as business professionals.

Since an introvert likes to be alone and it’s beneficial for them, they can make the most of that time to come up with the best possible solutions and ideas. Which may not as easily occur to them when they’re around others.

Tip #4: Don’t be afraid to delegate

Although introverts won’t shy away from collaboration and make their fellow team members feel heard. They may be less inclined to take the next step and delegate tasks or ask for help.

The fact that introverts may feel a sense of responsibility to get things done on their own isn’t always the best way of thinking.

Not leaning on other people when you need it may delay you from reaching your business goals. Or stop you from even achieving them at all.

Try to let go of any insecurities related to passing work on to someone else. You’d want someone to pass work to you if your skills were better placed for the task, right?

Use this as a confidence boost to pass on the right tasks to the right people. Don’t hold onto something if someone else can do a better job.

Any experienced business owner will know that they must rely on outside resources and the skills provided through their connections to attain long-term success.

introvert success

Learning how to Succeed as an Introvert

There are a lot of labels out there regarding what makes a person successful.

Personal qualities like being outgoing, sociable, confident, and driven are often named. Sometimes, those traits don’t match the stereotypical idea of an introvert.

Introverts are just as capable of exhibiting these qualities as any other personality type. But just because they can doesn’t mean that’s how they will best succeed.

Introverts make even greater leaders, entrepreneurs, and business owners when they embrace their unique qualities.

Often considered naturally thoughtful and attentive people. Introverts are more likely to make a strong effort to create lasting and meaningful bonds through networking instead of spending time on small talk.

As introspective beings, they can focus on a goal and diligently work towards it when it matters most for their business or career.

In many ways, introverts make up a significant portion of society’s greatest thinkers, doers, and innovators.

So there’s never been a question of whether introverts can succeed, especially if they embrace themselves for who they are.

Are you an introvert in business? Let us know if you saw yourself in this article and what your business is in the comments. We’d love to hear from you!

I’ve read a lot of minimalist books over the years. They’ve ranged from how-to decluttering guides to memoirs and simplicity guides.

So I thought it would be incredibly useful to talk about these 8 minimalist books in particular. All so we can see if we learn anything, and perhaps by the end of this article, you’ll know whether to bother reading these books or not.

Visual learner? Watch the video:

I’m going to be real with you though, I do consider myself a minimalist.

Does that mean I’m going to sing the praises of all these books? No.

Does it mean I like absolutely everything about minimalism? No.

So with a slightly objective perspective, let’s take a look at 8 minimalist books and see if they’re worth reading or not.

8 minimalist books to read

So with a slightly objective perspective, let’s take a look at 8 minimalist books and see if they’re worth reading or not.

the power of less

The Power of Less: The Fine Art of Limiting Yourself to the Essential… in Business and in Life by Leo Babauta

Get the book: https://amzn.to/3feF6dR

Quite a mouthful

Leo’s book has one main take away: focus on the essential and eliminate the rest.

His book uses minimalism (without actually saying it) to help you simplify your work and personal life.

Applying the principles of elimination to productivity, habits, goal setting, time management, routines, and more.

Each chapter contains a ton of practical advice with steps to help you achieve some of the simple tactics Leo himself uses.

Leo’s writing style is similar to Tim Ferris, the author of The 4-hour workweek. It’s to the point, sharp, and easy to read.

I’d say if you’re struggling with productivity and have way too much on your plate – this one is worth a read.

minimalism live a meaningful life

Minimalism: Live a Meaningful Life by The Minimalists

Get the book: https://amzn.to/3BVLEbd

Live a Meaningful Life is a short guide that breaks down the 5 values the Minimalists have determined for a person to live a meaningful life, which are:

Health, relationships, passions, growth, and contribution.

It also interweaves this with the story of how both Ryan and Joshua became minimalists.

The book hardly mentions minimalism in terms of ‘stuff’ but instead talks about the internal work that comes after you’ve decluttered your home.

Because once you’ve finished with the external ‘stuff’ in your life, you’re free to work on the internal.

It’s short, to the point, and serves as bonus material to their already existing mass of content on their website.

Because of the length, the pair only touch briefly on each of the 5 values, illustrating the advice they believe will help the reader figure out what their life should look like.

There’s absolutely some great advice in the book and if you’re new to The Minimalists then this may be worth a read.

essentialism

Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown

Get the book: https://amzn.to/3rHqYPr

Although this is technically Essentialism, because it’s in the title, I’m going to talk about it in this video because I’m quite fond of this book.

According to Greg, Essentialism is about eliminating the non-essential to make room for the things that we personally deem actually essential.

It’s less about the things you own and more about the choices you make in life.

The premise of this book is that if you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will. It’s basically a guide to stop you saying yes to everything, or wasting your time on things that aren’t well, essential.

I’d like to think this book is the suped-up version of both the previous books in this list.

You can apply the things the author says to work, life, family, relationships and goals you might have.

The author focuses on work for the majority of the book because that’s where he’s used his methods the most, so bear that in mind.

I want to talk about something here though. The author talks a lot about choice and how we have the power to choose a different direction or choose our priorities.

While this is true to a certain extent, it’s a very privileged position to be in. To have the option to choose and still feel safe, secure or even free.

That’s not to discount what the book stands for or encourages, it’s just worth bearing in mind.

This one is easy to read, has a bunch of useful information and isn’t preachy at all – worth a read.

goodbye things

Goodbye, Things: The New Japanese Minimalism by Fumio Sasaki

Get the book: https://amzn.to/3lcxah7

Goodbye, Things is perhaps the simplest of all the books on this list.

Sasaki tells the story of his transformation from a stressed-out, regular guy who hordes stuff, to a focused, grateful, and fulfilled regular guy who doesn’t.

He walks you through the changes he made in his life with a few photographs to give you a visual idea.

Sasaki practices a more extreme version of minimalism. He owns very little and I mean very little.

What I like about this book is that it’s easy-going, Sasaki is humble throughout, simply sharing his experiences and giving you some tips along the way.

The problem with such an extreme take on minimalism though is that it scares people.

Sasaki quite literally has just one towel and he swaps it for a quick-dry cloth that you could literally scrunch into your hand.

If you read the reviews on Goodreads, you’ll see people either loving it as a breath of fresh air or going full drama declaring themselves maximalists.

So we’ll move on shall we?

digital minimalism

Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World by Cal Newport

Get the book: https://amzn.to/37aevdO

Digital Minimalism is all about applying minimalism, to our digital lives.

In other words, reducing the amount of exposure to social media, dare I say the internet and technology, in general, to make room for more focus, better relationships, and less stress in our lives.

Listen, I know as well as the next millennial that reducing the amount of content we consume, or the time we spend on our digital devices isn’t easy, but in his book, Cal makes the idea of digital minimalism accessible.

He walks the reader through stories of people from different walks of life reducing the amount of reliance they have on technology and gives you some very useful step-by-step solutions to do the same.

Just like all the books in this list, you don’t have to take every single piece of advice on and that’s no different in Cal’s book.

Take or leave the strategies you think will work for you, but either way, this is a read.

the minimalist home books

The Minimalist Home: A Room-By-Room Guide to a Decluttered, Refocused Life by Joshua Becker

Get the book: https://amzn.to/2VnIMTt

The Minimalist Home is probably the most ‘how-toey’ out of all the books on this list.

If anything, it’s more of a guidebook to decluttering your home and being intentional about it while you’re at it.

Joshua takes you through every room in your house and helps you to declutter each one.

He’s not forceful about it, he doesn’t set weird rules, it’s like a pep talk guiding you through while you declutter.

It’s pretty simple and had I read this right when I first started finding out about minimalism, I would have found it incredibly helpful.

So if you’re right at the start of your ‘minimalist journey’ and need a guide – this will do it.

the longing for less

The Longing for Less: Living with Minimalism by Kyle Chayka

Get the book: https://amzn.to/3lcxoVv

The Longing for Less is a critical commentary on the history and impact of minimalism as a whole.

I have to say, I wouldn’t have picked it up, had it not been for the title.

It’s entirely my fault for not reading the book summary but at first glance, you’d think the book is about the author’s journey with minimalism.

Oh no no my friend, it is not.

This book quite literally takes you through, in a very academic way, where minimalism started, and how it got to where it is now.

It’s less about lifestyle minimalism and more about the art movement. Although it does talk about both.

While this one was unexpected, I do see there being a place for it if you love history and deep-dives. Especially if you’re looking for something that’s a little more objective and less emotionally driven.

It would have been great reading material for my minimalist business article that’s for sure!

One key takeaway worth noting was the author’s almost psychological diagnosis of minimalists.

He says that there might be an element of control going on with minimalists.

That minimalists might seek to control their personal world because the outside world is not within their control.

If they can’t work to fix or change outside circumstances then they can certainly work on themselves.

That sounds about right to me!

love people, use things

Love People, Use Things by The Minimalists

Get the book: https://amzn.to/3xfwUjV

Love People, Use Things offers itself as a little gift for our COVID stricken age, as an antidote to our apparent love for the things in our lives over the people in our lives.

It walks you through the different relationships you have in your life: stuff, truth, self, values, money, creativity, and people.

And within each of those chapters it shares stories from people The Minimalists have met, people they’ve interviewed in podcasts, and average people like me and you who have done a decluttering challenge The Minimalists call a packing party.

At the end of each chapter is a more how-to-style coaching section from Ryan while the majority of the book is written by the other half of the minimalists, Joshua.

My opinion:

I so wanted to love this book.

I’ve read every book the Minimalists have put out and I’ve listened to a good chunk of their podcasts too, which I think is why I didn’t enjoy this book.

There’s nothing new here. It’s all regurgitated content from their previous books – sometimes word-for-word. Or tidbits from their podcast episodes.

It also reads a little culty. There I said it, and I know, many of these lifestyle or personal development movements can sound like a cult and this book sure does it.

Joshua has a style of writing that’s, how do I put it, inaccessible? While I understand his joy of writing, his choice of words can make it appear as though he’s being quite self-indulgent at the expense of the reader.

Having said this, there are plenty of key takeaways from the book that I personally like.

One of which reads ‘Minimalism starts with the stuff, but that’s just the beginning’.

Because once you’ve intentionally decluttered your stuff. You naturally make room for moving onto decluttering your inner life too.

Many of the books in this list touch on this in some way.

For many, this means having the freedom to work on relationships, personal development, fitness, and health. Both mental and physical.

With the unwanted stuff removed from their lives, many minimalists are free from caring for, thinking about, or getting frustrated with their stuff.

Leaving plenty of time to look inward instead.

Okay so what have I learned?

Once you’ve read it once, you’ve read it a thousand times.

This is more a commentary on my apparent need to keep reading minimalist books because honestly, they all say similar things.

So if you see me reading another minimalism book on Goodreads, you know I have an addiction.

Once you’ve read one book on decluttering, you’ve probably got it and once you’ve read one book on simplifying the rest of your life, you’ve probably got that too. Although there’s no harm in getting a refresher every now and then.

Plus as I mentioned earlier, a lot of these books are written from the perspective of a lot of privilege.

Sure some of the authors didn’t grow up with it, but by the time they started to implement minimalism, they were usually well off, safe and for the majority of these books, white.

So if you know of any books on minimalism that aren’t written by white men, leave them in the comments.

Having said all this, if you’re looking to give these books a go (because there are some good ones here), here are my favourites:

And I’d like to make a nod to Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport because I’m a big fan.

Okay so over to you. Have you read any of the minimalist books on this list? Which did you enjoy?

How to Change the Story You Tell Yourself https://limitbreaker.co/change-the-story-you-tell-yourself/ Thu, 05 Aug 2021 12:49:19 +0000 https://limitbreaker.co/?p=15482 Learn how to change the story you tell yourself with this step-by-step guide. Break those limiting beliefs and take control of your life.

The post How to Change the Story You Tell Yourself appeared first on Limit Breaker.

]]>
When you learn to change the story you tell yourself, you’ll find you can start to develop a healthier self-relationship.

Many of us tell ourselves we’re stuck in the same job or relationship for the rest of our lives and we have no hope of changing our lives for the better. But this simply isn’t true.

Learning how to rewrite your story can be a challenge for many of us.

This is especially true if we’ve been telling ourselves the same story over and over for many years. However, it’s something that’s possible for every one of us to achieve with a little guidance.

In this article, we’ll share everything you need to know to change your story and work to become the best version of yourself.

what is your story?

What is ‘your story’?

Your story includes everything you tell yourself about your life, which you believe is true.

It could include incidents that happened in your past that have shaped you into who you are today.

Everyone has a different story, and we are the narrator of our own lives. However, we often interpret events that have happened to us in different ways than what really happened.

If we recently went through a challenging breakup, we might tell ourselves we’ll never be loved again.

But by changing your story, you have the power to put yourself out there and meet someone wonderful again. Without feeling so stressed about being alone.

We have the power to write our story as the narrator, and it’s up to us to decide how our leading character reacts to the external events around us.

While the things that happened to us in the past are part of our lives, they shouldn’t result in limiting beliefs.

How psychology plays a part

One key concept to consider when it comes to discovering more about how to change the story you tell yourself is narrative psychology. This study is concerned with how humans deal with experiences by listening to and observing stories.

Many of us construct stories in our minds to deal with experiences and events that happened in our lives.

However, this doesn’t mean these stories are factually correct or helpful.

When you tell yourself you’ll never get a good job or find a new partner, this is much more likely to come true than if you change your story to a more positive one.

If you think it’s time to rewrite your story, you have the ability to change the story you tell yourself.

Keep reading as we discover the key steps to help you change your story.

How to change the story you tell yourself

You have the power to rewrite your story, but there’s no denying it will take some time and effort.

By following these steps listed below, you can work to overcome your current story and learn how to rewrite your story.

write down the story you tell yourself

Write down your current story

The first step to making any change is acknowledging where you are currently.

Start by writing down your current story so that you can identify where the problems are.

You can do this by writing your story down as a blurb or summary, just as you would see on the back cover of a book.

You are the main character of this story, so make sure this is reflected in your writing.

Don’t overthink this process or start worrying about the future, and just let whatever comes to mind pour out onto the paper. Go with the flow and see what happens before reviewing what you’ve written.

Take a look at the story you tell yourself

To change the story you tell yourself, you need to take a close look at the story you’ve written down.

Ask yourself these questions as you review your story:

 • In your writing, were you kind to the main character?
 • What emotions did you feel reading back the story?
 • What language did you use in the story?

If you feel sad, angry, happy, or confused, these are signs you’re on the right track with the exercise.

The way we talk to ourselves is so powerful and can be one of the key tools to help you change your story.

change the story you tell yourself

Rewrite your story

Now you’ve written your story, you get to throw away that version and have the chance to rewrite your story.

Look objectively at the character you’ve projected yourself as.

Try to rewrite your story, so it’s more positive, forward-thinking, and empowering. You still want the story to be true to you, so don’t write it as if you’re someone else.

We’d also encourage you to look at your limiting beliefs, which you can work through with this limiting belief exercise.

Limiting beliefs can be incredibly detrimental to our lives. So the sooner you work to break them, the more empowered you’ll be to change your story.

follow through with your story

How to follow through with your new story

Once your new story is written, the hard work isn’t over. You need to ensure that you follow through with the changes.

If you previously told yourself you were unhealthy and lazy and you’ve rewritten your story to incorporate a healthier lifestyle. You need to push yourself to keep going on this journey.

While you can work to change your story, you are the one who has the power to keep these positive changes going. And really work to become the best version of yourself.

Work to become the best version of you

Trying to become the best version of yourself is a lifelong journey, but it’s something that we should all take the time and effort to work towards.

By identifying the character traits and the activities you would do as the best version of yourself, you can aim to change the story you tell yourself.

Imagine what your life would look like if you weren’t limited by the story you were previously telling yourself.

This journey is a very personal one and is directly linked to your goals, passions, and personal life. Working to be the best version of yourself and shifting your mindset is something that you can strive towards for the rest of your life, and you’ll experience many benefits from this process.

good person

Surround yourself with the ‘right’ people

When we surround ourselves with a strong support system, we are much more likely to be able to handle the challenges that come our way. When you tell the people around you about how you are trying to rewrite your story, they’ll be able to support you on your journey.

Surrounding yourself with the right people often means considering your current relationships.

While this can certainly be something that’s challenging to come to terms with, it’s an essential step in the process of learning how to rewrite your story.

relationship with yourself

Develop a healthy relationship with yourself

When did you last stop and think about the relationship you have with yourself? Your self-relationship is directly linked to the need to change your story, and the two likely have many similarities.

We are the person we spend the most time with. While it’s undoubtedly important to surround yourself with good people, the relationship with yourself is the most important one you’ll ever have.

Take the time to get to know yourself again and discover what you need to change about this self-relationship.

Think about the way you speak to yourself and treat yourself each day in order to make the changes that are needed and foster a more nurturing and loving relationship.

invest in yourself

Keep writing it down

One of the best tools to change the story you tell yourself is journaling. While we already shared the exercise early with writing down your story, this is something you can continue to do to change your story.

If you aren’t sure how to start, check out our advice on starting journaling. You don’t need to overthink journaling too much, and you should simply use this as a process to get your feelings out onto paper.

Journaling can help to take the thoughts you are having about yourself out of your mind and make you realise how you are talking to yourself.

You can physically choose to rewrite your story on paper and change how you talk to yourself about incidents in your life.

Change the story you tell yourself

Regardless of what story you are telling yourself currently, it’s never too late to change the story you tell yourself.

Many of us spend our lives believing that we are only destined for a certain path, but there’s so much more out there on offer for you.

Take the time to work through all of the exercises above to rewrite your story.

While this process may be challenging at times, it will be well worth the rewards at the end when you rewrite your story and remove those limiting beliefs from your life.

Well, in this article, you’ll find some practical advice to help you figure out what a fulfilling life looks like for you. And, most importantly, how to live it, and live it right now!

how to live a fulfilling life

What does a fulfilling life mean?

So what does it mean to live a fulfilling life?

Well, for each of us this is going to be different. To be fulfilled in life we need to understand our own purpose and values. Our own ‘why’ for living.

Fulfilment comes when we understand what motivates us. When we are focusing our time and energy on what matters most to us.

Living a fulfilling life is so much more than feeling happy in the moment. A fulfilling life is ultimately about meaning. Having a fulfilling life means finding deep satisfaction in what you do.

It’s about having a sense that you are being true to yourself as you go about your days. It is about being in the moment and noticing the opportunities for fulfilment all around you.

We can’t choose every aspect of our lives. For all of us, there are challenges to overcome. But by keeping our focus on living a fulfilling life we can draw from each moment the best that life has for us.

So how do we live a fulfilling life? Here are some tips to get you started.

How to live a fulfilling life

A fulfilling life will look different for each of us. Living a fulfilling life isn’t necessarily about changing your circumstances. Though there may be some changes you decide to make.

Leading a fulfilling life is as much about your attitude to life as it is your circumstances. And having a sense of meaning and purpose in our lives can make even the most challenging times easier to manage.

For each of us, we need to discover our own secret recipe for fulfilment. One that helps us to find what is meaningful to us, what makes us feel good and what fits with our values. But there are some principles that can help us all.

Here are some suggestions to help you find your way towards meaning and fulfilment, whatever your circumstances.

Make your priorities your actual priority

It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and to lose sight of our priorities. We all need regular opportunities to check in with ourselves and to keep on track. To see if the way we spend our time really matches our priorities.

Looking more closely at how we spend our days, and holding this up against what is really important to us, can be eye-opening. But this work of discovery is not about beating ourselves up.

Instead, try to see it as an opportunity. If you see a mismatch between how you spend your time and what would really fulfil you then you are already halfway towards living a more fulfilling life.

Now you have a sense of what would bring you more fulfilment you can begin to make small, steady changes to make it happen.

This week try to make sure that what is most important to you features on your to-do list as often as what is urgent.

It’s so easy for what is really important to get crowded out of our to-do lists, our diaries and our lives.

find meaning in work

Find meaning no matter what you do

As we think more about how to live a fulfilling life, we might begin to question if fulfilment is possible where we are right now. Do we need to suddenly switch careers to humanitarian work or launch a world-changing side business?

Perhaps changing jobs is the right thing for you or that business is where you’re meant to be. But making drastic changes isn’t a requirement for finding fulfilment in your life.

Fulfilment can be found in any job. It can be found where you are right now. Getting clear on your values can help you whatever your circumstances to make your work more fulfilling today.

Perhaps you can shift your role to include more aspects that give you that sense of purpose? Or perhaps, as you reflect on your values, you will see your job in a different light.

Lower your expectations

It might seem counterintuitive but another way to live a fulfilling life might be to lower your expectations! This doesn’t mean you need to cast off your standards. It simply means that expecting perfection in every situation can actually make us feel less fulfilled in our lives.

If we have impossibly high expectations, then life can end up as a series of disappointments. Instead of enjoying what is happening, we can find ourselves focusing on what we wish was happening instead.

An important part of living a fulfilling life is to be in the moment. When we accept life isn’t perfect, we can open ourselves up to all the good things that are happening right now.

Opportunities for a more fulfilling life may already be all around us but our unrealistic expectations are hiding them from our view.

Make time for gratitude

Living a fulfilling life is about how we view the life we already have. Have we stopped noticing the things that used to bring us joy?

What’s around us all the time can easily fade into the background. That’s natural. But when we stop noticing the good things we miss opportunities to feel fulfilled in life.

Practices like taking time to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life can send our sense of fulfilment soaring.

There are lots of ways to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and doing so can make a big difference to our sense of fulfilment in life.

Develop a good relationship with yourself

It’s difficult to feel truly fulfilled in life if we’re struggling with our relationship with ourselves.

Often in life, we put so much of our energy into relationships with other people. We know these relationships are important but what about our relationship with ourselves?

Living a fulfilling life means valuing and caring for ourselves. Fulfilment can be hard to come by when we feel depleted or when we are struggling with negative self-talk.

To feel truly fulfilled we need to have a healthy relationship with ourselves. Here are some practical tips on having a healthy relationship with yourself – if this feels like an area to work on for you.

surround yourself with good people

Surround yourself with ‘good’ people

Another important factor in living a fulfilling life are the relationships we surround ourselves with.

 • Do you feel uplifted by the people around you?
 • Are they spurring you on to your goals?
 • Are the key relationships in your life a place where you make happy memories?

Sometimes we need to think carefully about the people we have around us. We need to make a conscious effort to develop those relationships that build us up.

Good relationships are an essential ingredient to feeling fulfilled in life.

If this feels like an area for you to work on then check out this article on how to surround yourself with good people.

It’s time to live a more fulfilled life

Living a fulfilling life is possible whatever your circumstances.

Taking the time to discover what gives you a sense of meaning and purpose is vital to finding fulfilment every day.

There may be shifts you need to make for life to feel more fulfilling. But living a fulfilling life is as much about attitude as it is circumstances.

Gratitude. Self-Relationship. Freedom from Perfection. All these things can make life feel so much more fulfilling.

And isn’t that what we are all searching for after all?

Why you should surround yourself with good people

The people we spend our time with can have a positive or negative impact on our life.

Choosing to surround yourself with the right people can bring about positive changes to your life.

When you surround yourself with happy or upbeat people, this will soon rub off on you. You’ll start to feel like life is more enjoyable and exciting.

Why you should avoid ‘bad’ people

On the other hand, surrounding yourself with negative or toxic people can be hugely detrimental to your life.

Many people find that when they don’t surround themselves with good people, both their physical and mental health can suffer.

You may find that these people tend to bring you down or speak badly about you, which can impact your self-confidence over time.

This is why learning to surround yourself with good people is so important in any aspect of your life. As it can help to propel you forward in your career and personal life and improve your health.

Let’s dive into this further:

Good people will cheer you on

When you surround yourself with good people, you’ll find that they will be your number one cheerleader.

They’ll support you in every aspect of your life and will be excited for you when good things happen to you.

Whether you are aiming for a promotion at work or have recently entered into a new relationship. You’ll find that they are excited about anything good that comes your way.

They’ll help you to make better choices

If you surround yourself with positive people, you’ll find that you start making better choices in your life.

When it comes to your health, you’ll be much more likely to choose to eat a healthy meal or stop drinking when you’ve reached your limit.

When you surround yourself with good people, you’ll have positive influences around you who will be encouraging in every aspect of your life.

Create happy memories

The people we choose to spend our time with will have a huge impact on our memories of this stage in our life.

When you surround yourself with the right people, you’ll find that you remember the good times more than the struggles in your life.

Your time together won’t be filled with drama and negativity. You’ll only remember the good times that you’ve enjoyed together.

With all of these great benefits of choosing to surround yourself with the right people, you’re probably wondering how you can know if someone is a good person.

Keep reading as we share the key indicators of what makes someone a positive influence to spend your time with.

How to tell if someone is a ‘good’ person for you

One of the toughest parts about deciding to surround yourself with good people is understanding what type of people are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for you to spend time with.

It’s important to note that our suggestions are purely guidelines and not rules. Someone doesn’t have to display all of these attributes to be a good person.

What is considered ‘bad’ to someone may not have a detrimental impact on your life. So don’t rule someone out straight away if they display a couple of negative personality traits.

It’s all about using your judgement and thinking about how someone makes you feel after you spend time together.

Key traits of ‘good’ people

These are just a few of the key traits you can expect to see when you surround yourself with ‘good’ people:

 1. They’re honest. Good people are generally very honest. While sometimes honest words can be difficult to hear, in the long run, it’s usually for the best. It’s much better to surround yourself with someone who will give you tough love and honest feedback to help you get closer to your goals.
 2. They think of others. Empathy is one of the key traits of someone who is good to spend time with. If you’re going through a tough time, they’ll be there to empathise with what you’re going through.
 3. They’re consistent. We all need people in our lives who are consistent. You’ll know they’ll always turn up when they say they will and you can rely on them when you need them.
 4. They have gratitude. Gratitude is one of the key ways to transform your life. By appreciating all we have every day, we can start to see the good in even the simplest of things that happen to us. A ‘good’ person knows this.
 5. They make the best out of bad situations. There will always be challenges in our lives, but positive people know how to make the best out of a bad situation. They’ll put on a brave face and try to find the good in every situation.

Surrounding yourself with the ‘right’ people offers so many benefits, but it’s not always as easy as you may think.

Let’s take a look at the best ways to surround yourself with positive people. We’ll also explore how you can look out for signs that you might be spending time with someone who is detrimental to your health and wellbeing.

surround yourself with the right people

How to surround yourself with the right people

There’s no denying that this is easier said than done. But by knowing what to look out for when choosing who you spend your time with, you’ll be able to improve your quality of life and the way you feel about yourself.

Say no to the wrong people

Choosing to say no to the ‘wrong’ people will likely mean something different to each of us.

However, a general rule of thumb is that if someone has somebody in their life that is making them feel unworthy or bringing them down, it’s time to start saying no.

If they’re getting in the way of you reaching your goals or progressing in life, it’s a key sign you need to start distancing yourself from them and begin simplifying your life.

The best way to go about this is to start distancing yourself from these people gradually. Unless you’re in danger or in a toxic situation, you don’t necessarily want to cut people out of your life. Just start to spend less time with them.

You can slowly do this by not saying yes to their plans so often, or shortening the time you spend together.

By doing this, you’ll free up time to surround yourself with ‘good’ people.

Know yourself

Knowing and understanding yourself is the best way to surround yourself with the right people.

When you enjoy your own company and spend time doing the things you love, you’ll find it easier to meet other people who align with your interests and goals.

Alternatively, when you spend your time with people who don’t share your common interests. You’re much less likely to motivate and encourage each other to follow your dreams.

Create a healthy relationship with yourself

So when you focus on yourself and work to create a healthy relationship with yourself, you’ll be much more likely to put yourself in a situation where you meet like-minded people.

For example, if you love doing yoga but haven’t put aside time to join a local class. It’s a great opportunity to meet other people who are interested in fitness and mindfulness. You’ll find they likely share similar interests to you and are passionate about following a healthy lifestyle.

You don’t just have to think about choosing to surround yourself with good people in real life nowadays. Finding positive influences online is also important.

By choosing only to follow and get in touch with upbeat and motivational people on social media accounts, you’ll be far more likely to start interacting and making friends with people who share common interests.

Watch out for red flags

Finding good people to surround yourself with is just as much about avoiding ‘bad’ people. It’s so easy in both real life and online to slip back into your old habits and spend time with toxic people.

If you want to be surrounded by people for company, this might lead to spending time with people who don’t align with your interests and goals.

While everyone’s red flags will look slightly different. There are a few common ones that are likely to come up for most people.

 • Repeated negativity is something you want to avoid. If after spending time with someone you feel unsupported and worse about yourself. You’ll want to start to spend less time with them.
 • Excuse-driven people who often cancel on you at the last minute should also be avoided. They likely aren’t respectful of your time and energy.

Try to politely reject invitations to spend time with these people to distance yourself from them more.

This will allow you to free up time to do the things you enjoy and surround yourself with good people who will lift you up.

Gradually build your own support network

Once you’ve started to carve out time to focus on yourself, you’ll naturally start finding new ‘good’ people you could potentially bring into your life.

This is the stage where you want to start building your own support network and community. These people will be more reliable and encouraging when you spend time together.

When you start to become more open and generous with your time and energy towards the ‘good’ people in your life, your community will gradually grow.

You don’t need a huge community

Building valued one-on-one relationships can also help you to grow as a person. It can give you a really trusting relationship that you can turn to through challenging times.

When it comes to fostering new relationships, aim for two-way support. Where you provide them with the support they need during difficult times as well.

Allow yourself to be open and share your experiences with someone else, but also listen when they need someone to talk to.

What you give to someone will come back to you in return when you spend time with the right people.

Surround yourself with good people

When you choose to surround yourself with good people, you’ll find that you notice so many positive changes in your life.

While it can be hard to distance yourself from bad people if they’ve been part of your life for some time. It’s important to know when it’s time to move on and find yourself a new community to spend time with.
